Walgreens Register Rewards

Walgreens Register Rewards is a program that rewards you for shopping at Walgreens. Each week Walgreen has new items on sale, and some of these items will produce a RR, which is actually a manufacturer's coupon. Because of their crazy coupon policy, there are a lot of rules for earning and redeeming these "rewards", which I hope to clarify for you. Please note: This post is not in any way designed to circumnavigate the Walgreens system in any way that is wrong or illegal. However, because their policies are so strange and their cashiers so ill-trained (NOT the cashier's fault, btw), there is a process that will make it easier on everyone involved

1. Register Rewards are earned for buying participating items- usually there are promotions, like "Spend X amount and get X amount in RRs". Other times it is for single items.
2. RRs can be used like coupons on your purchase. Rewards like these are a great way to get items in drugstores for very little OOP expense.
3. RRs CANNOT be used to pay for the same type of transaction. For example, if Crest Toothpaste has a reward of $3.99, you cannot turn around and buy another tube of Crest toothpaste with those rewards. Well, you can BUY it, but you won't get any rewards on that second tube of toothpaste. If you are using RRs to stretch out your transactions for the lowest OOP, be sure to do a different type of transaction in between like purchases to earn all of the RRs you should. For example: Buy the toothpaste and earn $3 RR. Use that $3 RR to purchase another RR-earning item, like shampoo that has $3 in RR. Use the $3 RR from the shampoo to buy your other tube of toothpaste. Earn another $3 RR for the toothpaste.
4. Because they are manufacturer coupons, they can also NOT be redeemed on anything from that same manufacturer- if you try, you will not get rewards n the second item (confused yet? It goes downhill from here!). For example, if a bottle of TIde has a RR for $5, you cannot use it to purchase a bottle of Downy that also has RR-earning potential- your second RR (from the Downy) will not print out.
5. You also cannot buy multiples of the same RR-earning item in the same transaction (unless the sales paper tells you otherwise)- you will only earn one reward. For example, if Tide has a $5 RR, and you buy two bottles in the same transaction, you will only earn one $5 RR. Break up those transactions!
6. Because they are manufacturer coupons, you still need to be mindful that you do not have more coupons than you do items (see
Coupon Policy). Filler items will be your best friends at Walgreens! The RR will attach itself to your filler items so that everything will work out the way it is supposed to and so that the register will not beep, and so that all of your RRs will print out correctly.
7. Register Rewards expire rather quickly- usually in about 2 weeks. Don't forget about them- it really stinks when you realize that your RRs expired and you went through all that hassle for nothing!

I know that all of this info makes you want to RUN out to Walgreens right this second (ok, I am totally kidding)! Just be mindful that, if you really pay attention to your transactions, you can score big-time at Walgreens- and if you can do that with little or no headache... well, that is just icing on the cake!
